Pitch & Hold

Saw them first on 10days off where they gave a very nice set for (unfortunately) very few people. But since last summer Ghent based Pitch & Hold are definitely on a roll. Williams (Pokerflat, Get Physical - check out his Piccadily Circuits and Pinball) picked up their 'Pars Pro Toto' on their myspace and gave them a place in the roster of his new label Triangle Music.

First they did a massive 21st century rave remix for Williams own 'The Shivering'; which was celebrated with a nice party in The End in London and in a couple of weeks 'Pars Pro Toto' will have a release. Tiga, John Digweed, Laurent Garnier, Alex Kid and Poker Flat's Jeff Benett are spinning it already, so you know you can expect a minimal-progressive-neotrance (lovetrance?) bomb! File Under Brilliant: Jeff Samuel - Step (Trapez)

Jeff Samuel stood always for decent minimal-quality, but since 'Bork' (also on Trapez) he moved into more melodic territories which gave his releases just that little more. The third Trapez-album (after Oliver Hacke and the mindblowing debut of Alex Under) is again a killer. Am absolutely addicted to the openingtrack 'Those Were The Days' and closingtrack 'I think they are trying to say something'.

'Those Were The Days' is is the best techno-record of the year: Carl Craig meets Vitalic meets Jesse Somfay.

'I think they are trying to say something' is a James Holden-esque trip with UR-strings and a focus on the dancefloor. This is the track where they end a saturday-night/morning in Panorama in Berlin I suppose. Brilliant.

Ricardo Villalobos - Fizheuer Zieheuer

Hier moest ik toch iets over lossen.
Ik ben altijd meer een Luciano-liefhebber geweest dan een Villalobos-fan, zowel qua dj-sets als qua 12-inches, met dien verstande dat ik de écht goede Villalobos platen (Dexter, Easy Lee, Sieso) meteen buitenaards goed vond. En dan is er dit. Met Fizheuer Zieheuer springt Villalobos nog hoger – going boldly where no man has gone before.

De vraag die me nu al twee weken bezighoudt is waarom ik dit – en met mij blijkbaar vele anderen als ik wat rondsurf –zo’n fascinerende, allesoverrompelende totaalervaring vind. An sich is er weinig nieuws onder de zon. Ricardo haalt al zijn alom gekende trucs uit de kast (herhaling, faders, spanningsboog etc..) en toch beklijft iedere seconde van Fizheuer Zieheuer, waar bijvoorbeeld What’s wrong with my friends op Perlon dat totaal niet heeft.

Zijn het de trompetten? Dat alleen kan niet de enige verklaring zijn, maar toch is er iets vreemd aan de hand: het moment dat de trompetten invallen (ta-ta-taaaa) is bijna een fysiek genot. De rest van Fizheuer Zieheuer lijkt alleen een uitgesteld wachten, een uitgesteld verlangen te zijn naar het schallen der trompetten.

Verder is er geen enkele sfeer op Fizheuer Zieheuer te plakken: geen melancholie, geen blijdschap, geen opluchting, geen extase. Het is het grote Niets. De belofte van The Prodigy (I’ll take your brain to another dimension) wordt definitief waargemaakt. Fizheuer Zieheuer is ruimte; misschien is het het geluid van een post-industrieel hiernamaals.

Een ding is zeker: Fizheuer Zieheuer is de meest intrigerende en verslavende plaat van 2006.

A phone call to Putin

Today I had a workshop with a torture expert of the European Committee on the Prevention of Torture and he was describing a new technique which is currently used now in the Russian Police. The interrogation technique is called 'A Phonecall to Putin': The police attaches wires to the earlobes of an individual and send electric shocks through them. This practice can go on for up to nine (!) days...

The Guardian: There are echoes of Sam Peckinpah's western, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973). Both are stories outlaws forced to hunt down former partners, and deal with the brutal business of bringing "civilisation" to a wild land. This film also shares Pekinpah's exuberant, bloody violence.

Italian Television

Unbelievable. That's the only word that I have for Italian television after watching it for three weeks now. I saw one of the most absurd shows ever last week. A local television-station here in Venice has only enough money to buy the rights of one Champions League match per week. So what do they do on the other day? They show 8 talking heads who are shouting non stop at each other (they look at televison screens which are invisible for the viewer), while one or two men (dependant on the amount of italian teams that are playing) is watching in a seperate construction a television-screen. The camera zooms in on the speaker when something is happening. At the same time the moderator simulates the game on the kind of board they also use for tactical discussions in a school for football trainers.

So you are watching a guy that is watching television, 8 talking heads, the crazy presentator who simulates the game and then, of course, a beautiful young Italian lady who is sitting in the back of the screen, doing absolutely nothing.

* Another example: four times in each match (even when Italy is playing and it is broadcasted on Raiuno) there is IN the match a commercial of +/-20 seconds during a 'dead' moment in the match.

* The whole weekend there was a strike (literally everybody is striking here every 10 days so it seems). What did RAIUNO do? They showed the football match without any comments, because the commentators were not paid on time.

And don\t get me started on the big TV-shows...

So the long-awaited EP is immediately switched for an LP. Smart thinking James. James doesn't promise beats but 'sounds comparable to Aphex Twin, Four Tet, The Knife, Herbert and Boards of Canada'. Strange he opens with the not so very impressive 'Lump', which already appeared on a Damian Lazarus compilation. I really like the cover-art by the way: Border Community's regular design with a Jackson Pollock touch

The following Holden quote is maybe a good basis for a Fire In The Mind piece:
"It's about time I achieved something with my life. What I want to do in my production is electronic music that feels more human and more live, just letting the machines malfunction and me be barely in control of them. You just need to know where to inject the life into it, and how to, and then the computer can become an instrument just like any other. Computer music is naff really, unless it has that punk feel. Those dirty bits. That's what makes it human, and that's what I'm focusing on now."

Too bad I miss him on I love Techno, where he will play in the Yellow Room after Kraftwerk. (God, why do I have to miss this...)

Luistervoer

1.Het Grote Timbaland Pop-Offenensief

Met stip op 1 FutureSex/Love Sounds van Justin Timberlake.
Een beter geheel dan Justified, meer sex, meer elektro, minder duffe r&b ballads. De sleutel ligt in het midden van de plaat: 'Love Stoned'/'What goes around'/'Chop Me Up'. De bombast van 'Chop Me Up' is 'Cry me a River' met een bboy attitude. Waanzinnig goede popplaat. Beste popster sinds Michael Jackson (1985-1993). Verder ook de eerste helft van Loose van Nelly Furtado (Maneater! Promiscuous!). 2006 is tot nu toe Timbo's jaar, na een tijd Neptunes-dominantie. Beide platen deden me dan ook maar weer eens teruggrijpen naar Miss E.. So Addictive van Missy Elliot, One In a Million van Aaliyah en Vol. 2 Hard Knock Life van Jay Z. Nostalgie!

2. Dubstep dubstep dubstep

Mijn voorliefde voor drum'n'bass komt terug in gemuteerde vorm. Ik kan dubstep veel meer trekken dan grime (op de occasionele Wiley, Dizee Rascal en Kano beat na dan) omdat het een ding weglaat: de geforceerde driedubbele-knoop-in-de-tong raps, die mij altijd zo vermoeien. Dubstep gaat dan ook doen wat grime nooit kon doen: doorbreken in Europa. Ook hier weer een absolute nummer 1: The World is Gone van Various Production. Nu-folk meets Massive Attack (anno Bristol 1997), Portishead en Amit. Nog claustrofobischer: Burial's debuut (Burial) en Boxcutter's Oneiric. Mijn favoriete hoofdtelefoonmuziek van dit moment.

3. De herontdekking van de zomer

Discovery van Daft Punk. Na de triomftocht op Pukkelpop staat deze plaat weer bijna dagelijks op. Ik vind hem eigenlijk beter dan Homework.

3. Jacques Lucont
Onder invloed van mijn vriendin (en de James Holden remix van Get Together) ben ik Confessions on a Dancefloor van Madonna heel wat meer beginnen te appreciëren. Niet zozeer kwaliteit maar herinneringen spelen hier een rol denk ik.

A laidback summerbreeze to cool you down. Vienna's third best sofa-surfers (after Kruder & Dorfmeister and eh, the Sofa Surfers) remix the seminal 'Je t'aime... moi non plus'. This song featured on a very nice Serge Gainsbourg tribute-cd in 2001, but fell into anonymity later on. Other remixers on the 'I love Serge' cd include Herbert, Readymade, Howie B, The Orb and Faze Action, so you know you don't want to miss out on this one!

Zeer goed tot uitstekend begin van 2006 moet ik zeggen. De eerste zes platen zijn gegarandeerd Top10 materiaal. Iemand nog aanraders?

2006 wordt officieel hét jaar van de mixcd

...want dit is na Kiki en James Holden alweer een briljante mixcd (met een lelijke cover - wat loopt daar toch altijd mis mee?)

Luciano - Sci.Fi.Hi.Fi 2 (Soma)

Fact 1: Luciano is voor mij genialer dan Villalobos. Ik hou meer van Blind Behaviour dan van Achofa. En de gemiddelde Luciano-remix is altijd beter dan de gemiddelde Villalobos-remix. (Ja het is lente en dan is het tijd voor boude uitspraken - maar ik bedoel, geef me 1 Vilalobos-remix die op gelijke hoogte met die Salif Keita remix van Luciano staat. HA!)

Fact 2: Luciano slaagt erin om een 100% minimal-compilatie in elkaar te steken, zonder de (groot woord in aantocht!) spanningsboog te verliezen. Hulde daarvoor.

Fact 3: Dewe tweede Sci.Fi.Hi.Fi is weer volledig on spot met een pleiade aan voor mij onbekende parels. Was al met die eerste Sci.fi.hi.fi ook het geval. (De ondergewaardeerde editie van Ewan Pearson - lees er hier over.)

Verder even tussen haakjes vermelden dat iedereen nu al op het puntje van zijn stoel moet zitten voor de shows van Ellen Allien & Apparat op 5daysoff (12juli) en 10daysoff (14juli). Simpelweg omdat Orchestra of Bubbles de plaat van het jaar is. Meer daarover op KM (alsook een groot stuk over Nathan Fake en James Holden.)

Dinsdag vertrek ik naar Moldavië, dus dan zet de radiostilte zich weer in.

R&S is back!

R&S keert terug! Mission 2 noemen ze het zelf toepasselijk; demo's kunnen ingestuurd worden via de site voor de geinteresseerden. Word on the street dat Joey Beltram en Cisko Ferreira (na eerdere ruzie met founding father Renaat Vandepapeliere) alvast voor nieuwe releases zouden tekenen. Ben vooral benieuwd of R&S haar visionaire status kan behouden...

In de marge daarvan en ter uwer vermaak: lees deze scheldpartij tussen twee oude rotten uit het vak over wie Joey Beltram nu precies bij R&S bracht op discogs.
